Avrupa Parlamentosu'nu Protesto
Değerli Dostlar, Avrupa Parlamentosu Genel Kurulu, Dış İlişkiler Komisyonu'nun hazırladığı Türkiye raporunu, büyük olasıkla bu ay sonunda görüşecek. Anımsanacaktır, bu gerçek anlamıyla bir rapor değil. Türkiye'yi aşağılamayı hedefleyen tipik bir küstahlık belgesi.. Ermeni soykırım iddialarını, Pontus ve Süryani soykırımı şaklabanlıklarıyla süslemeye çalışıyor. Kıbrıs, PKK terörü ve türban konularında da Türkiye'yi hedef alıyor. Bu raporla ilgili olarak Brüksel'de temaslarda bulunan Türk parlamenter heyetinin de başarılı olabildiği söylenemez. CHP'li Onur Öymen ve Şükrü Elekdağ'a karşı AKP'li üyelerin türban konusunda raporu sahiplenmeleri, rapora karşı kararlı bir Türkiye tavrını gündemden düşürmüş bulunuyor. Bu durumda, iş bir kez daha başa düşüyor. Avrupa Parlamentosu'nu protesto etmek, üyelerini uyarmak yurttaş olarak bize kalıyor.. Bu konuda harekete geçmemizi Sayın Nihat Ergün önermişti. Sayın Aykut Uzdiyem Avrupa Parlamentosu üyelerine gönderilecek aşağıdaki ve ilişikteki İngilizce metni hazırladı. TBMM'nde bulunmayan Avrupa Parlamentosu üyelerinin mail adreslerini de, Sayın Nihat Ergün'ün kızı Başak Deniz Ergün İnternet'te özel bir çalışmayla saptadı. Bu listeyi ekte sunuyorum. Re: Defamatory content in Turkey's progress towards accession report by AFET.
Dear Sir/Madam,
As a Turkish citizen supporting friendly relations between Turkey and the EU, I found the draft report on "Turkey's progress towards accession" (2006/2118(INI)) and especially the 343 amendments to it voted and adopted by AFET on 4 September 2006 as appalling and defamatory against Turkey and Turkish people.
While it is in AFET's capacity and responsibility to report the positive and criticizing comments on accession process, with the 343 amendments largely shaped by racial and religious prejudices against Turkey, the report in question has well exceeded the boundaries of constructive criticism. The baseless accusations introduced by the amendments turned the report into a document seemingly aiming to defame and insult Turkish people and Turkey. Therefore, the draft report as it stands lacks of any credibility and convincingness and unfortunately bears the hallmarks of a deep-rooted antipathy towards Turkish people.
It is noteworthy that the amendments have come from the factions where there have been a historical resentment, prejudice against and conflict of interests with Turkey. Therefore, it is difficult to claim that the report has been written in an objective manner.
Among the many examples, the report
- accuses some legal and legitimate Turkish NGOs as being 'racist’, since an MEP did not share the political opinions of the organization. Without a court decision, the claim by the MEP can be legally classed as a defamation and libeling (1)
- mentions the surreal claims that Turkish people committed genocide against Pontic Greeks, although the reality was closer to the other way around. (More than 2.5 million Turkish people have been ethnically cleansed from the Greek and Balkan soils in that period)(2)
- claims that Turkish people committed genocide against Assyrians, a claim even the Assyrian organizations reacted. (3)
It is notable that when faced with similar accusations against the EU member countries, the owners of the mentioned and many other amendment proposals have acted contradictorily in the past(4), presenting an apparent duality and insincerity.
The factual errors and conflicts in the report are abundant. The sheer volume of the amendments turned the important report to an incoherent document where the urban stories mix with irrational claims and unsubstantiated, even surreal allegations.
The defamatory, even xenophobic content introduced due to ethnic nationalism in the report, left uncorrected in due manner, has the potential to damage EP’s had-earned credibility and to jeopardize its chances to be taken seriously in the legislative process of Turkey's EU accession.
I believe that xenophobia and racial prejudices should be eliminated in the new Europe. To this effect, I invite the respectable members of the EP to honour the reality by eliminating these elements from the report before the voting on it at the end of September 2006. I further invite the members of EP to seriously revise not only the report, but also the attitude towards Turkey and Turkish people by keeping the discussion on Turkey’s accession process away from ethnic defamation at all levels. This would not only serve to the better relations of EU and Turkey, but also to the long-term credibility of the EP.
